Dry Flies

The “Tiger-Tail” – My favorite type of fly fishing is definitely casting to selectively rising trout, however, let’s face it, most of the time, that’s a difficult situation to find unless you live on a spring creek. Since developing the “Tiger-Tail” series of flies a couple years ago, my personal angling has centered around the “TIGER”, and has doubled my amount of action on streams like the Missouri and lakes like Georgetown. This type of fishing required a special looking dry fly that floated like a cork and simulated a sliding shuck. The problem with floatation, is that the back half of a fly has to support three quarters of the total weight. So, we designed the “Tiger-Tail” which has a tail that provides an incredible amount of floatation. Plus, it’s a great- looking fly that really seems to turn the fish on. This type of fishing is certainly not for everyone. If you tend to stand in one spot all day, fishing nymphs and indicators, you probably won’t enjoy or be very effective at this extreme angling, but if you’re good at skittering a fly, have a quick wrist, pin point accuracy and great mending ability, you’ll likely increase your catch – and – have a lot more fun doing it. The better your casting skills, the better you’ll be at what I call the “Knock-Knock” technique. For now, we’re offering the “Tiger” in the original pattern and one size only. Size 12 -  Down the road we’ll have many more patterns.

  The “Creature” – A few years ago, Karl Gebhart and I developed a fly we named the “Creature”, which has become one of our favorites, especially during the late season when small flies are on the water. It’s deadly when tiny flies, like tricos, and pseudos and midges are hatching and it’s tied out of our Generation X Dubbing. It consists of  just a body, floats like a cork and looks like anything and everything on the water. A few weeks ago on the famous Mc Coy’s Spring Creek Ranch near Dillon, It was the only fly that would take those extremely difficult risers. We tie it in many colors, but for right now, we are offering it in Black only, which is normally the best color.         Sizes 18 and 20,

FAT ALBERT -- Brent Taylor's original version of the deadliest foam fly we've ever put on the water. This fly was absolutely incredible on the rivers like the Big Hole and the Beaverhead all last season.

HI-FLOAT EMERGER – On todays market, emergers are basically tied with a high floating material, usually CDC, up front and a sinking material, normally synthetic fibers, off the rear of the hook to represent the trailing shuck. It’s been my experience that the higher the “Entire” fly floats, the more deadly it is. Ever notice how a fresh high – floating dry fly is a real killer on the first cast but isn’t looking so good after it becomes water – laden and floats low in the film? The lower a fly floats the easier it is for the fish to see the discrepancies. So, for our new emerger, we tie “Both” the wing and tail out of CDC.  Floats like a cork and does a better job of fooling the fish. It comes in 2 body colors, brown and olive, and in 3 sizes, 14, 16, 18

"FUZZIE FLY" – This is not a fly that I use every day. It’s what I call a “special occasion” pattern. Generally, it doesn’t work too well, but when it’s “on”, it’s unbelievable! On waters like Georgetown Lake, McCoy’s spring creek and the Doll House Pool on the Missouri, this giant dry fly has given me some of my very best moments. It has un-believable action with the Incredible Legs up front and the “Shaking Shuck” hanging off the rear – along with the unsinkable Clumpa Style Hackle on top. Give it a try!

"BUTTON FLIES" These little buttons are the staple of my "match-the-hatch" fly box. Of course nothing works all the time, but these little guys have bailed me out of more situations than anything else. I think the reason they work so well is that they display such a simple, clean outline to the fish. Sometimes we get too carried away trying to create an exact imitation and the trout can easily spot our discrepancies. These patterns all have hackle that is locked down with my "rubber post" method and float extremely well. If you fish spring creeks, tail waters or anywhere there are selective fish rising, I’m sure you’ll quickly learn to appreciate these flies, named "Buttons" because when the rubber post is clipped, it slams down and forms a perfectly round button. THE "CLUMPA" This dynamite dry fly is one of my deadliest patterns. It works well for both hatches and spinner falls -and- is an excellent pattern for "pounding 'em up". Between the "Clumpa" and the "Buttons", I feel I'm pretty well covered for most dry fly situations. Adams gray body with grizzly hackle.
